Diwali or Deepawali is one of the biggest Indian Hindu festivals. The word Diwali is a Sanskrit word meaning “ a series of light lamps”. It is celebrated on Karthika(a month in the Indian Calendar) Amavasya. In 2022, it will be celebrated on 24th October. Apart from the Hindus community, it is celebrated by Jain, Sikh, and Buddhist communities.

Happy Diwali images with lightOn this day, people worship Goddess Lakshmi, the wife of God Vishnu. As per the Hindu beliefs, she is a goddess of wealth and prosperity. In the evening, people do Lakshmi Puja and serve her Food Fruits, Sweets, etc.

It is a five-day festival starts from Dhanteras and concludes at Bhai-Duj. The first day is Dhanteras, the second day is Narak Chaturdashi, Third Day Diwali (Lakshmi Puja), Fourth Day Padwa, and Fifth day Bhai Duj.

Diwali History

Diwali is one of the ancient Indian festivals. It is celebrated by the Treta Yuga. Lord Shri Ram, the son of Raja Dashratha of Ayodha returned back to his native land after completing 14 years of Vaanvaasa. Diwali was celebrated in Ayodhya by lightening Deeps to honor their ruler, Lord Rama.

On this day in 527 B.C., Lord Mahavir achieved Moksha. Jain community celebrates Diwali as Nirvana, a Spiritual awakening festival.

Sikh Community honors Sixth Sikh Guru, Guru Govind Singh Ji on this day. They were freed from the Mughal imprisonment on the same day. Also, one of the Diwali facts is associated with the Sikh community. The famous Swarna Temple development starts from the day of Diwali in 1577.

When was Diwali First Celebrated?

The return of Lord Rama after 14 years was the biggest occasion for the Ayodhya Natives. Their King came marking the biggest victory over Ravana, one of the greatest rulers in history. The People of Ayodhya celebrated his arrival by lighting Diwali Diyas naming the occasion “Diwali or Deepawali”.

Good wins over evil

Good wins over evil always. Ravana was very powerful and had a big army but with truth, and confidence Lord Rama defeated him.

Respect our enemies

When Ravana was dying, Lord Rama asked Lakshman to go and take some life lessons from Ravana. Though he was their enemy but was a very intelligent person.

Respect our parents

To keep the value of his father’s promise, Lord Rama went to Vanvaasa. It teaches us to obey our elders.

Devotion

Lord Hanuman is an ideal of devotion. They devoted their whole life to Lord Rama and always followed their way.

Never underestimate anyone

When Lord Hanuman reached Lanka to see Sita Mata, Ravana caught him and fired his tail. Later, Lord Hanuman fired the whole Lanka and burn it into ashes through his tail only. So, it is better not to underestimate others and keep ego far away from us.

 

How Diwali is celebrated in India?

In India, people wait for a year for this day. The light soil lamps outside the home; decorate the home with electric lightings, and light lamps. All Indian cities look city of lights from the satellite view.

Hindu families wear traditional outfits, draw rangoli, observe Lakshmi Pooja, and pray the almighty God in the temples in the morning. They visit their relatives, neighbor homes to wish Happy Diwali wishes and share the joy and happiness with each other.  After the Lakshmi Pooja, people firecrackers and some do donations to the needy people to make their Diwali happy and prosperous.

 

When Diwali is coming in 2019?

In 2019, Karthik Amavasya is coming on 27th October. So, Deepawali will be celebrated on 27th October.
